Incentive to offset the fact that it was not feasible for BPD to have take-home cars despite competing with other agencies that do
Multi-jurisdictional Radio System
Participated on the Williamson County Radio Authority Committee that oversaw the implementation of a county-wide radio system
Deployed new “less lethal weapon” – TASERs to all Officers
Equipped all Officers with another less lethal option that we felt to be more effective than OC Spray
Implemented Chief’s Sheepdog Award
Recognition given to a select number of police personnel twice a year for actions that are outside of normal expectations; typically acts of kindness from the heart that has been documented by another member of the department
LPR Deployment
Deployed 2 phases of License Plate Recognition cameras in City Parks and on city streets to create a geofence around the city that has been tremendously effective in solving crime
Succession Plan Defined (Met with Commissioners Individually)
Developed a succession plan beginning in 2019 to identify and prepare department personnel for anticipated turnover in the coming years so that the transition from the top down would be seamless and in place to promote from within
Tactical Response Team fully functional in 2020 – Validation Process
Created a tactical response team to equip and train select Officers to make a tactical response from their patrol cars more rapidly than the traditional SWAT call-out. Initiative was in response to active shooters and crime trends that evolve quickly and require rapid response
Designed/Built State of the Art Police Building
All offices/functions except Communications moved in April 2021 which coincided with the Police Department’s 50th Anniversary

Added 3 Civilian Positions, including Communications Supervisor
Hired 77 Police employees
At the time of retirement, Chief Hughes is the 3rd most tenured employee with the City of Brentwood. He was the 104th employee hired at the City of Brentwood. He has been with the police department for 36 of the 52 years of the Police Department’s existence.
He is the 3rd Police Chief in the history of the Department.
